WWRY SEQUEL -
TORONTO DEBUT?

On the possibility of follow-up production to Queen's smash-hit musical, We Will Rock You, to kick off in Canada - after the enormous success of Mk1 in the Canon Theatre, Toronto - ... BEN ELTON talking on phone from Liverpool to THE TORONTO STAR yesterday....

---

THE SHOW MUST GO ON
TORONTO STAR
Apr 16, 2008

Ben Elton says with 24 top 10 Queen hits not heard in the first show "it would be foolish not to" pen a 'We Will Rock You' sequel.

Get ready for a sequel to We Will Rock You, and it may start here

Hey Toronto, get ready to rock again.

In an exclusive interview yesterday, show writer-director Ben Elton told the Star that not only is a We Will Rock You sequel planned, but there is a very good chance it could start in Toronto.

"We love this city so much," said Elton, "not just the talent of its actors but the generosity of its audiences. It's a lovely thought to start it all over again here, isn't it?"

Although the concept of a follow-up to the Queen musical had been something "we'd always sort of fancied" according to Elton, the rabbit was let out of the hat by Queen guitarist and songwriter Brian May on Monday when in the course of getting an honourary degree from Exeter University, he revealed that a follow-up to the story of Galileo and Scaramouche was closer than anyone had thought.

"It would be foolish not to do it," said Elton on the phone from Liverpool where his next Mirvish show, The Boys in the Photograph, was having a workshop production.

"Not only do most audiences have a real and genuine affection for the characters," reasoned Elton, "but there's also 24 top 10 chart singles we didn't get a chance to use in We Will Rock You."

Elton said that what held the creators back for so long was the incredible popularity of the original We Will Rock You.

"Why do something new," he asked, "when the original is still performing so well?" And in fact, the show is still selling out in London as it has ever since its opening in 2002. It continues in Toronto at the Canon Theatre until May 11.

But the fascination of taking his characters that extra step further finally proved irresistible to Elton and "six months ago, I dove right in and spent a few months on it."

He showed his new version to May and Queen drummer Roger Taylor, who pronounced themselves "thrilled with it."

Elton said his sequel follows the same scenario that "we all know happens to rock stars: they achieve their dreams and then they screw up." The character Galileo, having become "the first rock star of the new millennium" in We Will Rock You, is ripe for the downward slide to destruction."He was a little bit of a dick already in the first part," said Elton, "but because of his youth and innocence, he was a lovable one." In the sequel, however, "he does the journey Elvis does and gets into some really awful things."

The faithful Scaramouche stands behind her man and "tries to rid him of some of his more awful pretensions," according to Elton. He sees their relationship as not unlike that between "a lead guitarist and a singer, where one is always trying to keep the other in line with a combination of sheer force and dry wit."

Elton, aware that he'd probably revealed too much already, did volunteer that "the forces of the Killer Queen are recruiting again and the Bohemians have to figure out what to do about it."

But how soon will this new show launch?

"We can't do it in England," insisted Elton, "not while the first one is still selling out. We're victims of our own success." That's why a Toronto production looms as an increasingly attractive possibility, especially in a city that Elton finds "so congenial to work in" and with a producing team like the Mirvishes, whom he finds "Grade A all the way down the line."

And the title? As Elton said, "If you dip into Queen's greatest hits, you'd hardly find a better one than `The Show Must Go On.'"

LIGHT RELIEF DAY AIMS TO TOP £5,000

ETNOW.com
14 Apr 08

With many lighting designers already giving their support, the second annual Light Relief Day, which this year takes place on Thursday April 24, looks set to top the £5000 raised in 2007.

Already pledging to donate their royalties for April 24 to Light Relief are the lighting designers of many shows, including a couple of overseas productions: Paule Constable, The City at Royal Court Theatre, Chris Davey (no specific show); Rick Fisher, Billy Elliot UK and Australia; Rob Halliday, Equus UK tour and My Fair Lady US tour; Paul Pyant, Lord of the Rings; Malcolm Rippeth, Brief Encounter; Ian Scott, 39 Steps; Kevin Sleep, Woman in Black, James Whiteside for The Wedding Singer tour and Never Forget, donated in advance of its West End premiere in May; and Willie Williams, We Will Rock You, UK and French and Saunders Live Tour. Thanks to all these for their early commitment – it is hoped that more will join as Light Relief Day gets closer.

Light Relief Day was instigated by Rick Fisher in honour of the late Tony Gottelier as a permanent way of remembering him. As well as lighting designers, Rick hopes that more people and organisations will come on board this year, saying: "The first Light Relief Day in 2007 was a huge success and demonstrated how lighting designers are fully behind Tony's idea of having a fund to help members of the industry. It would be great if, say, the rental companies would climb on board, as well as more designers and suppliers."

Tony Gottelier was instrumental in setting up Light Relief, which aims to help lighting industry professionals in times of extreme hardship. Rick, who as well as being a co-founder of the charity is also chairman of the Association of Lighting Designers (ALD), says: “Like most freelance people, lighting designers and technicians only earn when they are actually working. So if, say, a family crisis prevents someone working, they lose their income – but usually can’t claim on insurance.

“Tony was universally respected in the lighting arena, and we thought it fitting that we dedicate a day to him, so that people can show their support to others in the industry. Many of us have done well out of our profession, and it’s only right that we put some of that aside to help others.”

Any individuals who support Light Relief Day can make full use of their donation by Gift Aiding their contribution, enabling Light Relief to claim an extra 28% in tax relief.

Rick concludes: “Last year proved what we are capable of – let’s go all out to make Light Relief Day 2008 an even bigger success!”

COVER FEATURE: IM TAE KYUNG "SINGS THE CLASSICS" - "LOVE OF MY LIFE"

According to the KOREA TIMES (13 Apr 2008), crossover, Korean tenor, Im Tae Kyung has released an album 11 April 2008, titled: Im Tae Kyung: Sings the Classics?", featuring 13 covers of well-known pop classic. Im gave two concerts last week at the LG Arts Center in Seoul to promote the album. which is his first recording in four years and first in series exploring the meaning of classical music.

EXTRACT:
"Traditional" and "enduring" are associated with the word "classic", and classical music usually refers to centuries-old work by Beethoven and other dead composers. In his new album, "Sings the Clasics?" (Sony BMG Music), tenor, Im Tae-kyung delves into a classic crossover conundrum / a musical quest challenging the meaning of classical music.

"The question mark is most important in 'Sings the Classics?', the 34-year-old said in a concert last week to promote his freshly released album. "Wouldn't the music that is skin-deep to our generation become classic 100 years from now?", he said to a very responsive and packed crowd at the LG Arts Center, southern Soeul.

He addresses the "thesis" question with his first "case study" of beloved American and British pop from the 1970s and 80s. Im sings 13 classical melodies by John Lennon, Queen, The Carpenters, Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra and Simon & Garfunkle among others. These artists are household names in Korea, havig been amust in the music literature for the older generation and appearing time and again in various soundtracks.

QUEEN AND DEEP PURPLE CONCERTS TO HIT
BIG SCREEN THIS MONTH IN USA

Two of the world's most ground-breaking and memorable concerts will be shown on theatre screens across the country for an exclusive, one night-only engagement on Monday, April 28, courtesy of The Bigger Picture, the alternative content distribution division of Access Integrated Technologies, Inc.

In November 1981, with "Under Pressure" topping the charts in the UK, QUEEN arrived in Montreal following dates in Japan and their record-breaking tour of Latin America. It was to be the only concert by QUEEN that was ever shot on film. Always a great live band, with arguably the greatest frontman of all time in Freddie Mercury, they excelled themselves with the cameras rolling. The picture has been digitally restored from the original film and the sound has been newly mixed and mastered for DTS Surround Sound and PCM Stereo from the original multi-track tapes.

Few bands are more closely associated with Montreux than DEEP PURPLE and there was simply no other contender when it came to choosing the act to headline the closing night of the 40th Montreux Festival in 2006. The band duly delivered one of their finest live performances, sprinkling songs from their latest album "Rapture Of The Deep" through a set chock full of their classic tracks. There was even a brand new song "Too Much Fun" written especially for the occasion and, of course, a show-stopping performance of "Smoke On The Water".

These two historic concerts, digitally re-mastered, will instantly reach millions more across the country through The Bigger Picture's nationwide movie screening, which offers the highest quality picture and sound available in DCI-conforming 2K digital cinema.

"Fans of QUEEN and DEEP PURPLE have an unparalleled opportunity to experience these not-to-be-forgotten live concerts in their local multi-plex with beautiful digital cinema sound and picture," said Jonathan Dern, Co-president of The Bigger Picture. "There is nothing like feeling as though you have the best seats in the house and fans shouldn't miss it!"

This unique movie engagement provides fans with an unparalleled opportunity to see and hear QUEEN and DEEP PURPLE up close and personal.

QUEEN SET TO ROCK ‘N’ RULE ECHO ARENA

ORMSKIRK ADVERTISER
by Peter Harvey
10 Apr 08

ROCK gods Queen have announced they will be performing at the ECHO Arena later this year.

In the last few weeks alone, the arena has added Elton John, comic Steve Coogan and Bryan Adams to its programme.

The legendary band are touring again with Paul Rodgers, the frontman of Free and Bad Company and have also jointly recorded an album.

Queen’s last album was “Made In Heaven”, released in November 1995, and contained the last recordings of Freddie Mercury who died from Aids-related pneumonia in 1991.

The album became the band’s biggest selling studio album, with world sales in excess of 20 million. Their Greatest Hits album is the UK’s biggest selling album of all time, selling nearly five-and-a-half million copies.

The title of their new album is being kept a closely guarded secret which will be divulged before the tour begins.

Guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor have previously toured with Paul Rodgers in 2005 to 2006 and appear at the Kings Dock arena on October 18, one of just six UK dates on their tour.

Tour promoter Paul Roberts said: “It’s a huge coup for Liverpool. You build an arena and people will come. Liverpool has a huge musical heritage and this year being Capital of Culture is a happy coincidence. We could have gone to Manchester but we thought we would support Liverpool.”

In 1985 Queen set records with their live performance at the Rock in Rio concert. The band played to an unheard of audience of 300,000 and was watched on television by nearly 200 million people throughout the South American continent.

Queen and Paul Rodgers perform on October 18. Tickets £49.50. Echo Arena 0844 8000 400. (Please note for the time being SOLD OUT.)

“THE SHOW MUST GO ON”

Wednesdays through to Saturdays Time Doors open at 20h00, curtain raises at 20h30
Cost R67, 00 per person

Bookings: Tickets are available through Computicket or call 083 915 8000

Few people can claim not to have heard of the band Queen, or their iconic lead singer Freddie Mercury. In a tribute to this gifted band of musicians, Cedric Vandenschrik has produced “The show must go on” which will run from 10 April to 24 May, Wednesdays through to Saturdays, at GrandWest’s Roxy Revue Bar.

Queen deserves acclaim for being one of the most successful rock bands of all times. Their worldwide record sales since the band first formed in 1970, is estimated to be 300-million.

Much of their success is attributable to their flamboyant lead singer. The vocal range of Mercury’s voice continues to enthral fans but what many probably don’t know, is that he was also a successful songwriter. Although he claimed to be barely able to read music, Mercury often penned intricate harmonies that he composed on his piano. He penned 10 of the 17 songs that feature on Queen’s Greatest Hits album. Among the hits that he wrote are the ever popular “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “We are the Champions”.

In The show must go on, Cedric will be joined on stage by the talented Amanda Tiffin. Together they aim to introduce their audience to the diverse musical arrangements and vocal harmonies of Queen, and the energy, dynamism and colour that personified Freddie Mercury.

The show will focus on four specific stages of Mercury’s career. The repertoire includes, among others, “Another one bites the dust”, “I want to break free”, “One Vision”, “Radio gaga”, “We will rock you”, “Who wants to live forever” and “Don't stop me now”.

BEN ELTON HIRED ON TO PHANTOM SEQUEL

CBC News
09 Apr 08

Ben Elton, the creator of the London hit We Will Rock You, will work with Andrew Lloyd Webber on a sequel to The Phantom of the Opera, one of his most successful musicals.

Elton is working with Lloyd Webber on The Boys in the Photograph, a musical that will debut in Winnipeg and Toronto next year.

A spokesperson for Lloyd Webber announced the new collaboration in London, England, according to a report in Playbill.

Elton, 48, will be the librettist for the Phantom sequel, which Lloyd Webber first announced last year.

Lloyd Webber is the British composer behind musicals such as Cats and Evita and is participating in the Canadian version of TV reality show How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?

In the sequel, the Phantom is living in a fairground in Coney Island around 1900 and is reunited with the now-married singer Christine.

The Phantom of the Opera won seven 1988 Tony Awards, including best musical, and was the longest-running show in Broadway history.

The sequel, directed by Jack O'Brien, is expected to open in New York in 2009, though no date has been confirmed.

The Boys in the Photograph, developed from an earlier Lloyd Webber musical, The Beautiful Game, is the story of two teenage boys growing up in 1960s Belfast against a backdrop of sectarian violence.

Elton, 48, is writing the book for The Boys in the Photograph and is also directing the co-production between Manitoba Theatre Centry and Toronto's Mirvish Productions that debuts next April in Winnipeg.

QUEEN-MAD

THE NEW STRAITS TIMES
By : Faridul Anwar Farinordin

Dazzling set and costumes in the show.

Stage musical We Will Rock You takes FARIDUL ANWAR FARINORDIN swinging back to the era of unforgettable rock band Queen.

The Bohemians brace for a musical revolution in We Will Rock You.

LIKE Mamma Mia!, We Will Rock You is regarded as a“jukebox musical”. You may think “rock musical” a better tag, but look closely and you’ll see that it is essentially a theatre show with a plot held together by popular songs.

Mamma Mia! is a family drama with disco songs by Swedish group Abba whereas We Will Rock You gives us a story built around tunes by legendary rock group Queen.

The good thing is, thankfully, is that it makes sense, in a whimsical way.

It is set in the future, where youngsters are divided into the conforming Gaga Kids (the introductory song Radio Gaga was self-explanatory) and the more rebellious Bohemians.

In this futuristic adult fairy tale, musical instruments are banned, and the mere mention of “live” music or any of the musical greats of the 20th century could land you in a green high-voltage electro-cell beamed from the above.

Led by the evil Killer Queen who is aided by her hunchmen at Globalsoft Corporation, she will stop at nothing — even in a middle of a bikini wax session — to make sure that the youngsters continue to be supplied with synthesised pop and do what they’re told.

Out comes Galileo Figaro, a leather-clad teenager who hears song lyrics in his head (“who let the dogs out, who? who?”) and finds inspirations from names that pop up in his head — yes, including Elvis Presley, which unfortunately means little to the post-apocalyptic community.

To him, “weird is cool”. Representing “hope” in this seemingly hopeless future, he journeys on to find his destiny.

He starts with his calling-card tune, I Want to Break Free, and follows with other emotionally-charged Queen songs.

Together with his band of Bohemians in futuristic punk outfits and funny names, he takes the audience into a dazzling musical experience that is so cool with state-of-the-art multimedia features — funny, heartwarming, and rollicking good fun!

A brilliantly wacky comedy that pokes fun at pop music, icons and social conformity, there’s plenty of witty dialogue and feet-tapping numbers that need no introduction.

Galileo is played by MiG Ayesa, more popular in this part of the world as one of the finalists in the reality TV show Rockstar: INXS.

An experienced actor and performer, with a string of theatre shows under his belt including Buddy And Fame, his character will be remembered as the one with the best songs. Ayesa lived up to expectations with his tenor range, which was a joy to listen to.

He came across as a little wimpy though and, if it were not for We Will Rock You and Bohemian Rhapsody at the end of the show, there wouldn’t have been that much euphoria.

New Zealand singer Annie Crummer as Killer Queen was a bolt of lightning on stage.

Although much of the acting was stylised and a tad caricaturish, she brought in much charm and warmth despite her “evil character” role.

Supporting performances by Sivan Raphaely (Galileo’s love interest, Scaramouche), Neels Clasen (Killer Queen’s right-hand man Khashoggi) and Malcolm Terry (Pop, a futuristic “hippe” with a nose for good music) provided the humour and tenderness.

For the audience, Stephen John Van Niekerk and Carly Graeme were their favourites, judging from the applause on the gala night.

Playing the roles of Victoria Beckham and Ozzie Osbourne respectively, they brought the house down every time they appeared on stage.

What’s undeniable about this musical by Ben Elton and Queen (members Brian May and Roger Taylor supervised this theatrical piece from the start) was the raw energy from the cast that blew the crowd away, scene by scene.

If the music by Queen alone was not enough to punch you in the gut, the acting and slick choreography from the ensemble (think of the music videos from Madonna’s Vogue and Kylie Minogue’s Can’t Get You Out of My Head) could easily win you over.

* We Will Rock You is currently being staged at the Esplanade Theatre, Singapore until April 27. For tickets and other information, log on to www.sistic.com.sg. Lunchbox Theatrical Productions Pte Ltd is the show’s promoter.

QUEEN AND PAUL RODGERS PLAY NEW SONG

VH1 CLASSIC RADIO REPORT

Last week, TV watchers in England were treated to Queen and Paul Rodgers playing a new song called “C-lebrity,” but don’t worry, the performance is up on YouTube. The track will probably appear on the rockers’ upcoming album together, which is due out in September. No title has been announced yet, but one of the other tracks on the disc is “Say It’s Not True,” the song Queen and Paul Rodgers released as part of World Aids Day last year. They’ll kick off a tour overseas in mid-September.
