PHIL COLLINS CALLS IT QUITS
Phil Collins was interview by The Review Journal as he was about to embark on his Farewell Tour earlier this month month... kicking off in America.
---
Collins thought he wouldn't even be able to do this tour, because four years ago he suffered a sudden loss of about 60 percent of the hearing in his left ear. Doctors told him it would be unwise to perform in the uncontrollable din of a concert. A year ago, his ear gave him real trouble when he practiced with the band Queen at the royal Queen's Golden Jubilee.
"I was supposed to sing 'We Are The Champions,' and I went to rehearsal and my ear just went crazy when they came in loud. They were the loudest band I've ever heard, other than AC/DC. It was so loud my ear just screamed in pain."

BJORK COMPARES HER SONG TO BO RHAP
![]() |
Bjork recently discussed her instrument-free album new album with Newsweek... "Defying expectations has always been Bjork's favorite game. The eccentric musician from Reykjavik has experimented with electronica, show tunes and the sound of crunching snow. Her latest album, "Medulla," is almost entirely a cappella. It embraces Bjork's soaring harmonies, Rahzel the human beat box, an Inuit throat singer and Gregorian chanters. The 38-year-old explains why instruments bore her and defends her newest flight of fancy..." Discussing the album tracks, she draws similarities in her song,"Where Is The Line", to Bo Rhap. ?Question: But "Where Is the Line" is too complicated—the human beat box, the static production, the Seven Dwarfs-style whistling. |

We Will Preview You
Extract:
Well folks, we're up and running!
Previews have started. For those who don't know, previews are public performances that critics are not invited to attend. It's a time to get used to working in front of an audience, to see what works and what doesn't, what needs to get fixed before the critics come in for opening. (Generally, previews are cheaper than performances after opening night, but not in Vegas.)
Anyway, our previews have been just amazing. But to appreciate how great they were, let's back up to Wednesday tech rehearsal before previews.
It was horrible. An absolute nightmare. Tech stuff (and there's a LOT of it) wasn't working at all, and the constant stopping and starting hugely affected the amount of energy and life we were putting into the show. And, like a horrible sort of Groundhog Day, we would keep starting at the beginning every day (even though we'd only get through about half the show), so it was like we couldn't remember how the show ended.

'WE WILL ROCK YOU' A GREATEST-WIT COLLECTION AT PARIS
By
Jerry Fink
LAS VEGAS SUN
* What: "We Will Rock You."
* Where: Paris Las Vegas' Le Theatre des Arts.
* Rating (out of five stars): *****
In the distant future a muscular black male punk rocker sporting a mohawk is named Britney Spears.
Spears' girlfriend is a gorgeous blonde rocker named Ozzy Osbourne.
They are part of a waning tribe of Bohemians trying to keep rock 'n' roll alive, but more than 300 years have passed since the music was outlawed, and their scant knowledge of the era is pieces of information passed down over the generations.
The Bohemians have adopted rock 'n' roll names, but the names have no meaning to them. They only know that one day The Dreamer, The King -- a messiah figure -- one day will appear and lead them.
"We Will Rock You," the musical comedy that premiered this week at Paris Las Vegas, not only will rock you with some of Queen's most popular songs but will also entertain you with a witty script by Ben Elton.
The production was first staged in London two years ago, becoming one of that city's most popular shows. There's a good possibility that it may experience the same success in Las Vegas, where it has made its North American debut.
"We Will Rock You" runs an hour and 50 minutes without an intermission, but it moves so quickly and smoothly and is so much fun that one loses track of time.
The story opens with Pop sitting onstage, surrounded by rays of light that creates a laser jail cell. He talks to the audience.
"I still ain't found out the exact day that the music died," he says, "But 'American Idol' had a whole lot to do with it."
The show is perfectly cast with performers who have tremendous vocal talent, especially Rich Hebert, who does an outstanding job as the antagonist, Khashoggi, and Patti Russo as the Killer Queen, who is trying to stamp out live music forever.
Tony Vincent, who portrays Galileo (The Dreamer destined to save rock), and Aspen Miller (female protagonist Scaramouche) are excellent in their respective parts.
Douglas Crawford does a lot with his small-but-pivotal role as "Pop," a librarian who retains much of the knowledge about rock 'n' roll in his head, since all of the books and magazines on the subject have been destroyed.
Crawford most recently performed at the Paris in 2000, appearing as Quasimodo in the short-lived production of "Notre Dame de Paris." He can unpack his bags now. "We Will Rock You" should be here for a long run.
The sets are spectacular, the costumes interesting, the overall production almost flawless.
Like "Mamma Mia!" at Mandalay Bay (based on music by ABBA), "We Will Rock You" uses songs by one of the hottest bands of the '70s and early '80s to weave a light-hearted tale that should appeal to the broadest fan base. Who doesn't like rock 'n' roll, especially the older stuff?
The production opens with a three-piece set that includes "Radio Ga Ga" (a 1984 hit), "I Want to Break Free" ('84) and "Somebody to Love" ('76).
The final scene is another three-piece set: "We Will Rock You" ('77), "We are the Champions" ('77) and "Bohemian Rhapsody" ('75). In between there are a dozen more Queen numbers, among them "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" ('79), "Fat Bottomed Girls" ('78) and "Another One Bites the Dust" ('80).
There have been some adaptions made for Vegas audiences -- for example, when Galileo and Scaramouche begin their search for a specific guitar, the last remaining musical instrument in the world, the journey first takes them to Vegas, a city that has long been almost entirely submerged in water, an effect of global warming.
When the couple arrive at a Vegas lounge they meet Pop and a handful of zombie-like Bohemians, who have had their minds altered by the establishment.
From Vegas the search for the holy grail of instruments takes them to Graceland, a decaying mansion in Memphis that has lost meaning over the centuries.
Elton's cleverly written satire is reminiscent of George Orwell's "1984" and Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World," with a hint of Anthony Burgess' "Clockwork Orange" thrown in for good measure.
Elton uses the idea of mind control by mainstream society to get at the heart of what rock 'n' roll was all about at its inception: rebellion against the establishment.

HOW LIVE AID WAS SAVED FOR HISTORY
BBC News:
Live Aid, the legendary 1985 charity concert featuring stars from Paul McCartney
and Queen to U2 and Madonna, is being released on DVD for the first time.
The Live Aid concert was split between London and Philadelphia
It was one of the defining events of the 1980s, with an unequalled musical line-up contributing to one of the most memorable TV broadcasts ever made.
But Live Aid's transatlantic 16-hour show was almost not recorded at all.
When organiser Bob Geldof was persuading artists to take part, he promised it would be a one-off, never to be seen again.
That way, he said, they did not have to worry about contracts or embarrassment if they messed up amid the chaos of the day.If Geldof's plan had been followed, Live Aid would have remained a fond but fading memory.
But BBC Radio 1 concert co-ordinator Jeff Griffin realised history was about to be made - so recorded it anyway.
Mr
Griffin confronted Geldof at a meeting a month before the event. "I collared
him for about 30 seconds afterwards and just looked him in the face,"
Mr Griffin tells BBC News Online.
Prince Charles and Princess Diana were among 72,000 at Wembley
"I said 'Bob I hear what you're saying, but I have to disagree with you - I just think it would be irresponsible not to record it because this has all the makings of something very, very special'."
Geldof secretly acknowledged "it was silly not to do it", Mr Griffin says: "So he left it up to me."
Although video of the BBC One broadcast with high-quality multi-track audio was kept, many performances from the US were not shown in the UK and so were still missing.
The concert was split between Wembley Stadium, London, and JFK Stadium, Philadelphia - and US broadcaster ABC took Geldof more seriously and made its tapes unusable.
The DVD's producer Jill Sinclair says: "That was what was so heartbreaking because I had no idea that they would be so stupid. "Not that they thought they were being stupid, they just thought they were following instructions."
Another set of tapes had been given to the Smithsonian Institute - but were lost or stolen.
Eventually, more than 100 Live Aid tapes were tracked down in MTV's archives - albeit with songs cut short by ad breaks and presenters.
Ms Sinclair has not put incomplete songs on the DVD, but the four-disc set, to be released in the UK on 8 November, still clocks in at 10 hours.
Every person who appeared on stage - from backing singers to big stars - has been contacted to get their permission to be on the discs.
The
vast majority of artists agreed, saying: "We were there on the day, we
wanted to support the cause, we still want to support the cause," Ms
Sinclair says.
Madonna had just become a global star when she performed
"We may have been wearing some ridiculous fluorescent yellow shirt or some ludicrous mullet hairstyle - but it's a piece of history and we were part of it."
The only artists to refuse were Led Zeppelin because they said they put in a "sub-standard" performance.
"I did feel cross because I felt like they were letting me down as a fan of Led Zeppelin, I felt they were cheating me," Ms Sinclair says.
"But actually now I'm happy," she says, because Robert Plant and Jimmy Page are giving all royalties from their own forthcoming DVD to Band Aid.
"I could never have imagined they would have come back with something as generous as this," she says.
Technical glitches on the day came when Sir Paul McCartney and Freddie Mercury sang on although their microphones were not working.
Sir Paul re-recorded Let It Be a few days later, while Mercury's vocals have been recovered from other microphones that were working - so both performances are on disc.
'Can't be done'
"[Mercury] didn't know it wasn't being recorded, so he thought he was giving the performance of his life and it seems very hard to not include him," Ms Sinclair says.
As
well as the sound improvements, dodgy camera shots have been replaced and
the DVD has been finished in record time.
When Ms Sinclair took on the project in May, she says she was "completely
on the verge of passing out" when told how soon organisers
wanted it.
"They
said they wanted it for Christmas and I thought I'm not sure if I can do it
for Christmas - and I thought Christmas was in December," she says.
Phil Collins (left) and Sting were among the other stars on the bill
"And then the distributor said 'when we say Christmas, we mean October'. And I felt myself going a bit faint and said 'I don't think it can be done'."
So it has been an "extraordinary achievement", she says - but that has been down to the fact it was Live Aid. "Everybody just pulled out all the stops."
In
1984, when Band Aid's Do You Know It's Christmas? single came out, almost
everybody gave their services for free.
This time, artists are still not being paid but DVD company Warner and retailers
will take a cut of the £39.99 price. Warner paid a large lump sum to
the charity for rights to release the DVD, and will pay more as sales go up.
The
DVD is expected to be the must-have gift for every music fan this Christmas
- even those who cannot remember the show.
"It seems to me that even very young kids know about it," Ms Sinclair
says.
"It's become one of those things a bit like the Second World War - you don't have to have lived through it to know it happened."

QUEEN FIRST ROCK BAND APPROVED BY IRAN
Gay Icon Freddie Mercury Gets Official Seal Of Approval In Iran
AFP: 8/23/2004
TEHRAN, Aug 23 (AFP) - Rock band Queen, fronted by outlandish gay icon Freddie Mercury, have become the first rock band to be given the official seal of approval in Iran with the release of an album of their greatest hits, a source in the company that released the album told AFP Monday.
Mercury, who died of AIDS in 1991, was proud of his Iranian ancestry and supposed Zoroastrian origins, which made Queen one of the most popular bands in Iran, but western music is largely frowned upon in the Islamic republic, where homosexuality is considered a crime.
"Authorities approved of the tunes that had a social theme, leaving out the love songs," an executive in the company said.
The album contains smash hits such as "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Miracle" and "I Want to Break Free".
Western music is strictly censored in Iran and those selling foreign music need special permits, although millions of bootlegged banned CDs and cassettes are sold on the black market throughout the country.
The album is already selling very well. "It is the first rock album to hit the market legally and people are surprised and pleased to see it has the lyrics, not just the music," said Akbar Safari, a salesman at a Tehran book and record store.
The cassette, costing less than one US dollar, comes complete with explanatory leaflet, which tells rock fans that "Bohemian Rhapsody" is about a young man who has accidentally killed someone and, like Faust, sold his soul to the devil. On the night before his execution he calls God in Arabic, "Bismillah", and so regains his soul from Satan.
Other western acts to have had albums of selected songs released on the official Iranian market are Elton John, Julio Iglesias and Gypsy Kings.
There are also books containing original and translated lyrics by many western singers such as Leonard Cohen, Celine Dion and even white rap artist Eminem, published to respond to the ever increasing demands of a nation where 70 percent of the population is under 30.

'UNDER PRESSURE ON BOWIE'S OCT 19 LIVE DVD
From Music First: DAVID BOWIE'S NOT TOO SICK FOR YOUR LIVING ROOM. David Bowie's A Reality Tour was cut a bit short by the musician's emergency heart surgery, which led to the cancellation of the last several dates on the trek. But thankfully, Bowie was well enough for his Dublin, Ireland shows, which were taped for a future DVD release called David Bowie – A Reality Tour. The release makes good on a promise that Bowie himself made at the first of the Dublin shows when he said: "If we're going to film a DVD anywhere, this is the place to do it. I know it, you know it and they (the film crew) know it!" David Bowie – A Reality Tour will be out October 19th. --- In action - here is the "A Reality Tour" DVD track list: |

SIMON CROFT ABC RADIO 612 AM INTERVIEW
![]()
|
Simon Croft, one of the guitarists with the Australian We Will Rock You band, was the guest of Alex Bernard on ABC radio 612 AM on Thursday 12th August, 2004 Alex Bernard [pictured opposite] Biography --- Introduction – Alex: We’re going to meet a man who is living his dream. As a young fellow he wanted to be in a band, always admired Brian May from Queen. We’ll talk to him tonight. Later - Alex: I had the tremendous good fortune of going to see We Will Rock You, the musical based on the music of Queen, that’s my guest, Simon Croft, banging the desk! Simon actually, is the man behind the sound - on the guitar. He is doing all the Brian May parts throughout the show, and the day I went to it, undoubtedly, the biggest round of applause was reserved for Simon & the band, Simon, great to talk to you…. |
![]() Simon Croft - Guitar, WWRY, Australia |
|
Simon: Thanks, I should point out my band mates too, there’s another chap, James on guitar. Alex: Does it take two people to play the Brian May Parts? Simon: Well…definitely, at minimum! I mean, there’s some parts that Brian’s put seven guitars on I think, you know all those lovely harmonies…. Alex: Well Brian May of course - the guitar player from Queen - he is the musical director of We Will Rock You… Simon: Absolutely, he’s very in touch with what’s going on with our production and the ones around the world… Alex: Tell me how you got the gig? ‘Cos you’ve been a Queen fan since you were very young… Simon: Yes, since the seventies definitely, so that gives you an idea… Alex: (laughing) Simon: I saw the Night at the Opera tour in 1976, which was an amazing experience. Okay… how I got the gig was, I auditioned - like every guitar player around the country I think - but I didn’t find out about the audition until the day before which was a very odd experience! Alex: So you were asked to audition? Simon: Yes, and I found out where to go… Alex: Where was it? Simon: In Melbourne. Brian May, Roger Taylor were there… Alex: Oooooh!!! Simon: Exactly!! Change of underwear there!! And their wonderful music director, Mike Dixon who was working on the London show auditioning players. And they put you in a band situation with a drummer, bass player, three keyboard players and they said, “Here’s the songs, play them.” And you get a couple of run-throughs and they’d listen – it was in a recording studio environment and they would listen on the other side. We’d finish up and… I’ve never really done an audition like that before. It was, er….. Alex: What were you thinking? When you were playing Brian May guitar solos to Brian May? Simon: (Deep intake of breath) Er… well, I’m just thinking, ‘I hope I got that right,’ or ‘ I hope there’s something in there that he likes.’ To me he’s just looking for someone that can convey the music of Queen and still put a little bit of your own personality in. Alex: Because you are a fantastic mimic of Brian May’s style but it’s not a carbon copy of it. Simon: No, there’s… erm… there’s certain guitar solos that have to be performed as they were recorded. I mean if you changed the solos to Killer Queen, or Who Wants To Live Forever, or Bohemian Rhapsody, or I Want To Break Free, such solos are as important as the lyrics really. If you change the lyrics then the song would really go somewhere else. Alex: It’s a great story too, it’s lots of fun but it’s the music that really tells the story. What did Brian May say to you after the audition? Simon: He gave me a slight hint. At first he sat down and told me he was totally shagged from all the travelling, then he said, “Well you’ve made it very difficult.” And I thought he was speaking in general terms, but later on, when I found out I’d got the nod, so as to speak, that um, he’d er, approved of what I did. So that was nice. Alex: Oh… so how did you make it difficult? Had he decided on someone else? Simon: Well, I think they had had so many good players through really… Alex: Oh. Simon: … and the standard was really high. They’d auditioned on the Monday and Tuesday and I went in on the Tuesday. And I think the key was they put everyone in a band situation, and they see how you work straight away really with other players. Alex: Simon, you’ve been playing in bands for how long? Simon: Oh…. 20 years. Alex: Good way to make a crust! Simon: Yeah! Definitely. Alex: If that’s what you love. Simon: Oh yeah. It’s playing guitar, that’s what I love to do. It’s my hobby… er, it’s my… not my hobby really… Alex: It’s your job? Simon: It’s what I do most of my… I do it in my spare time also you know. Alex: And if you had to do a 9-5 job, what would you do? Simon: Well I was before this. I was working in a guitar shop. Alex: (Laughing) Oh… funnily enough!!! Simon: Yeah, teaching and selling guitars and servicing guitars. Alex: What happens after the show? Simon: After we finish up in Brisbane we’re off to Sydney and…. Alex: Will you only play in Australia, or will they invite you to play in… if it… if the show goes back to London. Isn’t it already… it’s playing in London currently… Simon: This is the Australian… Alex: Season… Simon: … yeah, production and er…. I’m not sure. There’s talk of it going to places overseas, but um… they’ll cross that bridge when they come to it I suppose. They may or may not ask us. I hope they do! Alex: Yeah, that’d be pretty cool. Performances by the cast are fantastic, they’re very strong performers. At the end of the show, when the band comes out, how much of a rush is that for you compared to playing in a band, like in a pub or…. It’s just such a different kind of gig. Simon: It’s totally different. From the start to finish, it’s a totally different environment because we’re… I don’t want to give away too much of course, but we’re working pretty much concealed from the audience. Alex: I thought it was a CD for the first half of the show. Simon: Oh, that’s a compliment! Alex: I did!! I couldn’t figure it out - whether it was a band with a CD of Brian May’s guitar, or whether it was a real person. And it turns out it was you. Simon: It’s all… it’s myself and seven other wonderful band mates. It’s different to playing in a pub so far as you stop and start. And it’s not like in a pub environment where you get… Alex: People throw things at you? Simon: …. Well, yeah. But we bow! The closest thing… I told people… the closest thing I ever got to bowing at a show before was dodging the beer cans. That’s a true story… playing in general, you know, when things got a bit rowdy. It’s different from any kind of pub gig ‘cos you’re more; you’re really focussing on the music. You’ve really got to work in with what’s going on on stage and there’s stoppages for dialogue. And you’ve really gotta be just concentrating all the time… Alex: The whole time Simon: …to be ready to, for your next cue. Alex: My guest is Simon Croft. He plays in the band in We Will Rock You, the musical. He does the Brian May guitar solos and he’s absolutely fantastic. I can’t recommend this show highly enough, even if you’re not a great fan of Queen. This is such a good story and the music is fantastic. It’s very, very well done. Simon you’ve been playing guitar for how many years? Simon: Well, since high school, erm… Alex: Many years? Simon: … many years, yes. Alex: Brian May’s obviously a big hero of yours. Someone… Simon: Absolutely. Alex: …whose style you admire. Who else did you like? Who did you admire? Who were you influenced by? Simon: Erm…. A lot of… I really liked an Irish blues player called Rory Gallagher, Stevie Ray Vaughan, who passed away in 1990. Steve Vai I think is a wonderful player – he recently played in Brisbane. A lot of the old blues players I really like. I like Gary Moore. Guitarist from Pink Floyd, David Gilmore is a wonderful player. So many good players to mention. Alex: We’re doing a book reading, the story of The Man That Death Forgot. Simon: Oh!! Keith. Alex: Keith, bless him. Who were the real pioneers do you think, in guitaring terms? Simon: Oooh, now that’s a hard one. There’s gonna be obviously the guys who played with Elvis - Carl Perkins, Scotty Moore. The chap who played the solo on Rock Around The Clock. He died, I think he fell down and broke his neck… Alex: Oh! Simon: … and in the sixties, you had Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton of course from Blues Breakers up to Cream, and even stuff he’s putting out today is just wonderful. I think he’s now … Eric Clapton’s more known as an artist/songwriter, rather than…. Alex: A guitarist. Simon: …yeah, but he can still play. Definitely. Alex: Yeah. Simon: So look, I s’pose The Beatles in a way - the way they put their songs together. But the guitarist that probably means more would be Jimi Hendrix. Put it all together I think and he’s still an influence today. If you listen to the Chili Peppers, there’s a lot of Jimi Hendrix in their music. Alex: Well interestingly, one of Keith’s early girlfriends ran of with Jimi Hendrix and gave him one of Keith’s guitars! Simon: Oh… Nice! Alex: True. Was his guitar playing as big as the legend of Keith do you think? Simon: Well that’s a good question. Because I’ve always thought The Rolling Stones sound was the interplay of the two guitars. And don’t they still call Ronnie Wood, ‘the new boy’? Alex: Heh! Poor Ronnie Wood. Simon: No, Keith’s wonderful. Alex: Congratulations on your work with We Will Rock You, ‘cos it’s just fantastic Simon: Oh, thank you very much. Alex: We can’t really talk about the band Queen without playing Bohemian Rhapsody. Simon: Yeah, definitive Queen. Alex: THE definitive Queen. Thanks Simon. Simon: Thank you very much. Bohemian Rhapsody Plays………… |

Vampire Rock is the latest creation of Steve Steinman, best known for his hugely successful Meat Loaf tribute act. With the man himself on tour, he perhaps decided it was time to broaden his horizons and the result was a rocking good night out. His group had been busy all week rehearsing and building the set which depicted the 'Live and Let Die' night club owned by the Baron Von Rockula and provided the perfect back drop for Steinman's band. The leading lady Pandora Honey Rosie Box enters the show as a primly dressed singer, with her matching hat and handbag. But under the Baron's spell she is soon transformed into a vamp in tight fitting, black leather, and finally dressed in a hot red, cat suit and whip! The show's star, the evil Baron Von Rockula played by Steve Steinman, takes us through his search for a bride who will agree to eternal immortality and life as his queen for ever. The story is embroidered with some of the great rock anthems from Meat Loaf, White Snake, Bon Jovi, Led Zeppelin and many many more. Finally, the audience was then invited by the Baron and his new bride to join in and blast out some of the old favourites such as Queen's 'We Will Rock You.' Everyone clearly had a great night and could have stayed and sung with the band all night. |

review from Amazon: On Stage, his new two-disc live recording, Keller Williams demonstrates why he is probably the only singer/songwriter whose solo acoustic performances can make you get up and dance. Williams has mastered the arcane art of "real-time phrase sampling," a technique that allows him to record and instantly play back short vocal and instrumental snippets and then use them to create hypnotic and undeniably funky loops. Williams uses these loops to create complex polyrhythmic grooves that he then overlays with his intense acoustic guitar playing--he's sounds a bit like Leo Kottke after a couple of extra espressos--or uses them as a frame for his obliquely funny lyrics. Williams' curious sense of humor extends to his choice of cover songs, which include Van Morrison's "Moondance," the Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth," and the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight," which he re-imagines as a joyous sing-along. Keller Williams is a 21st century one-man techno-tribal jam band. --Michael John Simmons |

ROCK IN A HARD PLACE

Rock in a Hard Place Queen's satiric
`We Will Rock You' imagines a futuristic world where Simon Cowell has
killed rock 'n' roll --- Ben Elton asks the question pondered by once-and-future headbangers even before "Wayne's World": "What does `Bohemian Rhapsody' mean? "It can be about a psycho killer or a holy priest," he notes. "The great thing about rock and pop is that it means whatever you want it to mean in the context you find it in." But Elton's interpretation of Queen's signature song arguably counts the most. He's the writer and Las Vegas director of "We Will Rock You," the comedic musical based on the Queen catalog. The group's 1976 "mock opera" hit becomes a pivotal running joke in the U.S. debut of the 2002 musical, which launched Monday at Paris Las Vegas for an open-ended run. Whoever Galileo and Scaramouche might have been in the song, they are now the rebellious young heroes of a futuristic satire in which musical instruments are banned from a corporate dystopia. |
"It's a very gentle satire," says Elton, better-known overseas as a fixture of British comedy and the prolific author of plays, novels, and plays adapted from his novels ("Popcorn," "Blast from the Past"). The core joke is that rock 'n' roll is now an ancient, long-forgotten art form that is only half-remembered by the rebels who believe," he explains. However, "these Bohemian self-styled rebels who remember the age of rock don't really remember it at all, and they're so confused about it they revere the Partridge Family as much as they revere the Beatles." Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor are co-producers of the venture. They could have signed away the rights and cashed the check, but chose to remain hands-on to make sure the show didn't end up sounding like the Partridge Family. "We call ourselves the guardians," says May, who has made it his mission to live up to the 1977 title tune that he wrote. "The vibe of the show and the liveness of the band are something I particularly keep a very close eye on. These freedoms shall be protected," he quips. "It shall not be `My Fair Lady.' " While May has learned to respect the theater -- his wife, Anita Dobson, is an actress -- Taylor was even more adamant. "I grew up loathing musical theater," he declares. "Men in tights, bursting into song and jumping around. I just hated it." Even the generally well-received Broadway version of "The Who's Tommy" bothered him. "I think it got too arty," Taylor says. "(`We Will Rock You') sounds great and it is about rock 'n' roll. `Tommy' is rock 'n' roll trying to escape what it is." Such misgivings about a Queen stage venture were somewhat at odds with a showy, tongue-in-cheek band that helped define the theatrics of arena rock and was perhaps destined for some type of theatrical crossover. "I suppose it was inevitable," May admits. "We Will Rock You" came to life as an alternate idea to a movie about the band's over-the-top frontman, Freddie Mercury, who died of AIDS complications in November 1991. Elton passed on the first suggestion from Tribeca, the production company co-founded by actor Robert De Niro. "I think Queen -- and Freddie above all -- were about comedy as much as rock," he says. "He had a very big sense of humor and the whole band had a big sense of fun and silliness and irony. I said all that should be reflected in this entertainment. I don't think it should be a heart-rending story about a great artist dying of AIDS." The possibilities of a "back catalog" musical became clear after ABBA's songs were crafted into another British-born hit, "Mamma Mia!" in 1999. "What you may call catalog musicals I would call celebrations and reworkings of the music that people love," Elton says. "The theater is now the one place where people can enjoy great rock 'n' roll in comfort. ... People used to get their pop music from the theater, before the days of recording and radio." Queen's manager approached Elton, who had been a fixture on British TV since his days of co-writing "Blackadder" with Richard Curtis, who later wrote the screenplays for "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and "Bridget Jones's Diary." Queen's
1984 hit "Radio Ga Ga" was the song that cemented the notions
"Pop Idol" -- the British forerunner to "American Idol"
-- had given Elton for "a general satire on our corporate world and
the marketing and the sanitization of our rock 'n' roll music." By 2040, the audience is told, "All musical instruments are banned. Rock is dead." That sets the stage for a future rebellion of the Bohemians -- the underground rockers and punks -- against the Global Soft Corporation. "Entertainment has become so profitable, the fear that a John (Lennon) and Paul (McCartney) or a punk movement might emerge and buck the marketing program is too big a risk to take," Elton explains. Yes, it's satire. For now. "If you think of the amount of work or preparation that goes into making the American Idol," it's not so far off, he says.
"When I was a kid," says the 45-year-old writer, "singles
climbed to No. 1, and we knew what the hit of the summer was at the end
of the summer when the dust had settled. Now, singles go in at No. 1,
and if they don't, they're deemed to be failures." The producers turned to the concert realm to recruit Mark Fisher and Willie Williams, whose credits include U2's "PopMart" tour and the Rolling Stones' "Bridges to Bablylon" stadium set. The video-heavy stage design lowers its live band on an automated bridge that straddles the rear of the stage. It's the band that helped assuage the fears of May and Taylor. "They're not session players. We actually formed a band," Taylor says. "We got some rock 'n' roll players." And the phrase "musical theater" remained "one of the very dirty words in our whole company," the soft-spoken May adds. "When somebody says, `That is very musical theater,' that is bad." The nuances are sometimes"pretty hard to put a finger on," he admits. "But there is always a moment when you can go in there and say, `That's pretty good but that isn't us.' Sometimes it's just a question of changing one note in a chord, or changing the way a song ends." So
what did become of "Bohemian Rhapsody," which Elton admits to
building backward from while structuring the plot? "We have a lot of fun at the expense of rock as well, at the expense of the posturing of bands like Queen. It's not just the pop idol machine that's the target," he says. "Great rock 'n' roll is silly." |

VEGAS GAMBLES ON MUSICALS
The Strip is starting to look like Broadway
Producers say audiences ready for edgy shows
"They
say the neon lights are bright on Broadway," goes the George Benson song.
But "they" apparently never saw Las Vegas.
Not only are The Strip's lights brighter than those of the Great White Way,
but its marquees might soon look as if they're actually near Times Square, judging
from the Broadway-style fare that is gradually invading Las Vegas.
The producers of Avenue Q won Broadway's Tony Award for best musical in June and then announced their show would open its only other production in Vegas, skipping a national tour .A few days later came word The Phantom Of The Opera would open a permanent production in a theatre carved out of the Venetian Hotel on The Strip .Already up and running for more than a year is Mamma Mia! — at its full Broadway length instead of the 90 minutes that has been the custom for most shows in Las Vegas. An open-ended run of the Broadway version of Saturday Night Fever is also on The Strip.
And beginning previews this week is We Will Rock You, a hit London musical with a score made up of Queen songs. It's bypassing Broadway for now and going straight to Las Vegas for its U.S. premiere. This incipient Broadway beachhead in Vegas could raise several challenges to competitors on both sides of the country. In Las Vegas itself, Broadway shows with professional but relatively unknown actors might deliver more bang for the buck to the hotels than expensive pop stars do. And Broadway musicals present an alternative to the Cirque du Soleil empire that is about to mount its fourth permanent show in Las Vegas, with a fifth possibly waiting in the wings.
East Coast snobs might shudder at the idea that an imitation Broadway could be born in the desert. But the reality is that for years both Broadway and The Strip have thrived primarily on tourists. Each city — New York and Las Vegas — drew slightly more than 35 million visitors last year. Las Vegas statisticians calculate that the average tourist spent $37.82 (all figures U.S.) to see some kind of show. It's true that most of those productions are not fonts of intellectual stimulation — but then neither is much of what's playing on Broadway.
The most unexpected of the Broadway entries in the Vegas sweepstakes is Avenue Q. Featuring puppets as well as actors, it offers a topless flash — but only on a puppet. And its themes are far removed from Vegas glitz. Its young, financially struggling characters would not be likely to vacation amid the slot machines. Sample song titles: "It Sucks to Be Me," "If You Were Gay," "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist."But Steve Wynn, the Vegas hotel mogul who earlier arranged for the itinerant Cirque du Soleil to park permanently in the desert and also opened the Bellagio resort with a gallery of fine art worth $300 million, saw Avenue Q three times in New York. He decided he wanted it as part of his new $2.5 billion Vegas resort, the Wynn Las Vegas, alongside a new water spectacle from a former Cirque du Soleil talent, Franco Dragone."Ten million dollars' worth of hydraulics cannot accomplish what Marcel Marceau can do," Wynn says, explaining his eclectic theatrical tastes. "I wanted a counterpoint, a sample of Marcel Marceau, to use a metaphor. Las Vegas has to develop theatre at its core, at its most fundamental. It's what separates us from the Indian casinos."
Avenue Q co-producer Kevin McCollum says a regular tour had been planned for the show, but it posed problems. Because the costs of moving from city to city would require the greater revenue potential of huge theatres, the musical would play in venues that would overwhelm such an intimate show. And it would require extensive advertising to identify itself: Unlike recent Tony winners Hairspray and The Producers, it's not based on a familiar source. The producers were miffed at requests from some of the presenters for bowdlerization of the show's lyrics as well as what McCollum felt were insufficient financial guarantees.
The Phantom Of The Opera in its run has grossed $3.2 billion and has been turned into a movie with an expected release this year. Even so, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and his producing partner, Clear Channel Entertainment, are convinced it has enough theatrical life left in it to warrant a $35 million production in a new $30 million theatre at the Venetian in Vegas. Still, the show will get a makeover. About an hour will be nipped to make it fit the usual Vegas length of 90 minutes with no intermission. With many Vegas visitors staying only two days, says Scott Zeiger, Clear Channel theatrical chief executive, "the hotels are not interested in keeping them captivated inside the theatre" when casinos, restaurants, spas and shops also want to raid wallets.
The new We Will Rock You uses the Mamma Mia! formula of combining a story with a pop group's song catalogue. But the hero of Ben Elton's book is a young male rebel 300 years in the future, and the stadium-filling music of Queen means a somewhat more male-skewed appeal than that of Mamma Mia!
We Will Rock You is a creation of Tribeca Productions, better known for its movies and its co-founder, Robert De Niro. The show opened on the West End in 2002 to mostly discouraging reviews, but they didn't seem to matter — it's still playing there and is spreading around the world.
Bobby Yee, president of Paris Las Vegas, where We Will Rock You will be presented in a 1,450-seat hall with six huge plasma screens, notes that the hall's previous Broadway-style occupant, Notre Dame De Paris, didn't do well. Yee wasn't there at the time, but the accepted explanation for its failure, he says, was its downbeat ending.
Avenue Q may be the biggest test yet to see if the traditional notion of the Las Vegas audience is going to change. "Las Vegas is going to become very, very edgy in the performing arts," Wynn says. "Thank God — it's about time."
